At The Ethical Diamond Company, we are proud to be associated with the idea of “conscious luxury”. This term has come about in response to growing demand for greater consideration for ethical and environmental issues in luxury areas like fashion and jewellery. In other words, people today want the best of all worlds – the desire for luxury hasn’t gone anywhere, but people want their luxuries to be guilt-free.
That’s definitely the way we see it too. We want everyone to enjoy the beauty and sparkle of diamonds, but we want our customers to feel happy and assured that our Ethical Diamonds are not harming our environment. Our stunning diamonds are cultivated in a laboratory using the latest scientific techniques, so don’t have either the environmental or the cost implications of mined diamond alternatives. The packaging we use is recycled and recyclable, and the metals used in our beautifully crafted jewellery are upcycled or reclaimed. So we can offer a genuine alternative to people who want a real diamond but not one that’s been mined.
Interestingly, it’s not just the world of fashion and jewellery that are responding to the need for conscious living. There’s a growing trend for conscious travel too – “experiential” or “transformative” travel that leads people to experience the world in new ways, and change their, and others’, lives in the process.
Proud partner of The Ethical Diamond Company, the BIG Foundation, offers one example of this new growth in conscious travel. Participants in the foundation’s programs get to travel to some of the most amazing parts of the world, see animals like lion, zebra, giraffe, elephant, in their natural habitats, and to help rural African communities build schools in the process! How wonderful is that?!
It’s also important to stress that progress doesn’t mean perfection. Everyone has the ability to do their bit. Sustainability is about “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, to quote former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. We really like this idea – it’s not an “all or nothing” approach, it’s an “all or something” approach!
